In Chelsea, the district located in Lower Manhattan, you will find a towering brick building. It is hard to believe that this gigantic antiquated building houses many stores. The building, which used to be a factory and office space for NABISCO, well-known for its chocolate sandwich cookie "Oreo", has now been transformed into a shopping mall with an attractive food court.
18 buildings on a large plot between 15th and 16th Streets and 9th and 10th Avenues were consolidated into this one huge building space. 28 stores occupy the first floor while offices for more than 20 companies reside on the 2nd floor and above. You can even find a local broadcasting station called "NY1" amongst them. The interior is decorated using the existing old bricks and pipes, reminiscent of the market place in the American good old days. Along the winding passage, cafes and delis are bustling with people.
One of the most unique stores in this mall is a bakery called "Fat Witch" which is their only store in NY. They bake their famous brownies right at the store for the customers to watch while they wait in line to purchase them. "Chelsea Thai" can be said to be the favorite diner for the local people for its affordable price and great food. You can surely tell by how crowded it is. For the wine lovers, do check out the "Chelsea Wine Vault" where countless wines are displayed by the regions of their origin. It is said that some of their precious wines are carefully tucked away in their stock room in the back. Ask for assistance from one of the helpful salesperson if you are looking for a specific brand of wine.
At the bakery "Amy's Bread," you can enjoy watching the baking process in the factory through its huge glass windows. Another treat, the "Lobster Place," has a showcase lined with fresh salmons, lobsters and oysters on ice. You can purchase a small individual portion and eat right at the bar. There is even a "Sushi" corner next to it.
Uptown and Soho are popular places to visit in New York, However, there are plenty of other hidden entertainment spots in the city. For your next visit to NY, please stop by the "Chelsea Market" to find your own adventure and discoveries.
