歴史を感じさせるドアを開けて中に入ると居心地のよさそうなバーがお客様をお出迎え。ランチや夕食時にはシェリーなど最高の食前酒を飲むことが出来ます。さらに奥に進むと六つのテーブルが並ぶダイニングスペース。足元は1800年代からそのままのオークのフローリング。窓からはかわいらしい庭が見え、壁には味わいあふれる骨董陶器が溢れんばかりに並んでいます。
さてアフタヌーンティーは、階上にある二つのお部屋のどちらかへと案内されます。小さいお部屋はマンハッタンでの生活にストレスを感じたときに最適。座ったとたんにゆったりとした時間が流れ始めます。天井は真っ青な空色、白い雲が浮かんでいます。壁にはどことなくのどかな狩の様子の絵が美しく描かれています。

一方、存在感のあるきらめくシャンデリアがぶら下がる大きいお部屋には、お客様の数に合わせ大きさを変えられる異なった六つのテーブルが並んでいます。さまざまな油絵や競走馬などの版画が深紅の壁を埋め尽くし、かすかに流れるオペラやクラシック、ブロードウェイミューシックと合わさり、完璧な雰囲気をかもし出しています。
席に着くとすぐにウエイターが本日の紅茶リストを読み上げます。ダージリン、アールグレイ、ブラックベリー、カモミール、ミントティー等・・。好みの紅茶をオーダーし待つことしばし、沢山のおもてなしの軽食が運ばれ、ウエイターが熱い紅茶をティーポットよりサーブします。スモークサーモン二切れに卵ときゅうりのサラダのフィンガーサンドウィッチ、香ばしいチキンとゴートチーズ。スコーン二つに使い切れないほどのクリームと苺ジャム。さらにデザートにレモンカード、花をあしらったチョコカップケーキ、ラズベリームースケーキに小さなエクレア、それとお気に入りの紅茶で大満足。サービスも丁寧で気配りが良く行き届いており、この素敵な空間を自分のペースで楽しませてくれます。 |

For those of us who truly enjoy the ritual of a proper afternoon tea, the tantalizing choices in Manhattan can present a joyous dilemma. If you desire old world charm, privacy, elegance, romance and yes, a perfect tea service, your decision is really quite simple. Kings’ Carriage House, built in 1895, originally an Irish Manor carriage house, is the destination.
The quaint entry has an inviting and cozy bar where one might sip some fine sherry before lunch or dinner. Also on the ground level is a dining area in the rear with six tables, original oak floors from the 1800’s, a small garden view and walls overflowing with intriguing china.
For tea, one is escorted up the stairs to one of two rooms. Fleeing the stress of Manhattan one afternoon, I sat in the smaller room where a restful atmosphere has been conjured up by painting the ceiling sky blue dotted with passing clouds. Pastoral hunting scenes grace the walls.
A sparkling chandelier dominates the larger room which has six tables of varying sizes. Its crimson walls are covered with a diverse range of oil paintings and prints of race horses. To close the gap to perfection, softly playing in the background was a variety of opera, classical and Broadway music.
Immediately after I had been seated, the waiter recited the list of available teas which included Darjeeling, Earl Grey, Blackberry, Chamomile and Mint. He returned shortly with a bounty of treats and poured a piping hot cup of tea. Each person is offered two each of smoked salmon, cucumber and egg salad finger sandwiches, and two savories of chicken and goat cheese. Two delicious mini scones were accompanied by a generous portion of clotted cream and strawberry jam housed in a sterling silver container. For dessert, there were four small pastries

a tart lemon curd square, floral decorated chocolate cupcake, raspberry mousse cake and a petite chocolate eclair. Service was truly attentive but carefully watchful to allow me to enjoy this divine experience at my own pace.
The carriage house provides warmth and taste and should not be missed. It is within walking distance from several museums on Fifth Avenue. What could be more delightful than partaking in the ritual of a refreshing afternoon tea after visiting The Metropolitan or The Guggenheim or another of New York’s finest museums?
