Plazastyle ： When and why did you decide to start this business?
いつ頃、なぜこのビジネスをはじめたいと思ったのでしょうか？
Julie ： Dave and I met when Dave worked in his cousin’s antique store in Chelsea; around 22 years ago. I moved in at the end of the block. I tell everyone that Dave fell in love with me immediately! Anyway, we both had a love for vintage dish and glassware. Our dates were always trips to antique markets and flea markets. In those days, in New York City, you could just walk into a store for rent and sign a lease. So we took a little store in Gramercy Park to sell all of the great things we were finding; old paintings, cabinets, crates and barrels and of course old dishes and glasses. Everything was vintage Americana, a sensibility that we both loved.
約22年前、DaveがChelseaにある親戚のアンティークショップで働いていた時に私が同じブロックに引っ越してきて知り合いました。
みんなにはDaveが私に一目惚れしたって言い回ってます！なにはともあれ、とにかく2人ともビンテージ食器が大好きでデートはいつもアンティークマーケットや蚤の市巡りばかり。
当時のNYCでは、空いてる店舗があればその場でサインをしてすぐに借りる事ができたので、グラマシーパークに小さな店舗を借りて自分達で探し集めた好きなアンテークを売るお店を開いたのが始まりです。お皿やグラスはもちろんのこと、古い絵画、キャビネット、木箱など全て大好きなアメリカン・ビンテージものでした。 |

Julie ： About six month into our lease we found this warehouse that was in a fire. It housed tons of restaurant china from all over the country. We were so impressed that the china was in such good shape after the fire (just like new) while the entire warehouse had burned down! We bought every piece of china home to our little apartment. Our bathtub and every single square inch of our apartment were filled with creamers, cups, platters and mugs. We scrubbed off some of the soot to find great names and logos from old hotels restaurants and diners. It was really the birth of great things to come for us! Commercial dishware would be the defining product of Fishs Eddy.
6ヶ月経過した頃、全焼したとある倉庫を見つけたんです。中には全米中から集められたレストラン用の食器が収められており、全焼したにもかかわらず食器自体は新品同様、原型をとどめていることにびっくりしました。全ての食器を買取り家に持ち帰りました。当然、バスタブからなにから部屋中全てクリーマー、カップ、お皿、マグなどで埋め尽くされた状態です。食器についたススを落としていると古い有名なホテルやレストランのロゴが現れ、この時今のFISHS EDDYを象徴する商品コンセプトが誕生しました。 |

Plazastyle ： Why did you choose the name“Fishs Eddy”?
なぜ“Fishs Eddy”（フィッシュズエディ）という名前を選んだのですか？
Julie ：Many of our road trips to scout for “wares” were upstate New York. We passed the town of Fishs Eddy many times and we always loved the quirky way it was spelled. When we did a little investigating we found out that a family with the last name of “Fish” actually founded the town in the mid 1800’s. There must have been little eddy in the town. The name Fishs Eddy sounded poetic and just very real to us. It felt like a good name for our store.
新たな食器を探すため、私たちはよくNY北部へ出かけていました。その度"FISHSEDDY"と言う街を通り過ぎるのですが、クセのあるその名前を見るたびに好きになっていったのです。調べてみるとFISHさんという一族が実際1800年代にその街を創ったと言うことがわかりました。きっとEDDYと言う子もいたに違いありません。FISHS EDDYと言う言葉の響きが詩的で、心にすごく伝わってきたのです。まさにこの名前が私達のお店にぴったりだと思いました。 |

Plazastyle ：How did you collect those tremendous antique collections?
こんなにたくさんのアンティークコレクションをどうやって集めたのですか？
Julie ：Over the last two decades we have had so many great “finds”. Dave and I cleaned out so many factories and warehouses that we lost count! We got all of the left over china from places like the Harvard Club, The 21 Club and the Helmsley Hotel. We have scoured basements from right here in New York’s Bowery to the mid west. Each time we would save pieces that were the most rare and special. Our collection is vast and the result of a lot of hard digging!
私達は過去20年以上にわたって、数多くのすばらい「掘り出しもの」を見つけることができました。Daveと2人で倉庫と言う倉庫を駆け巡り、見つけた食器を全て買いあさってきました。HarvardClub, The 21 Club, Helmsley Hotelと言ったところからのアンティークを入手することも出来ました。自分達の居るNYCからミッド・ウエストまで
地下倉庫も探し回った事がありますが、毎回ものすごく貴重なものが必ず見つかりました。
私たちの膨大なコレクションは、今まで相当力を入れて始終探し回り続けた賜物なんです。 |
