A Twinkle of Fashion in a Dreary Winter
Surviving this particularly severe winter has been a challenge for New Yorkers. This season’s 7 on Sixth NY Fashion Week arrived just in time to relieve our winter blues. Held in the usual Bryant Park tents, top designers from all over the world revealed their Fall 2004 creations with the overall theme being luxury. We saw lots of rich textured fabrics, velvet and cashmere combined in new, innovative ways. Designers like Oscar de la Renta, Tuleh, and Monique Lhuillier peppered their collections with lots of fur (focused on leopard print). Cynthia Steffe and Carolina Herrera tailored tweed to create feminine winter ensembles.
Once again we visited the adventurous world of designer Wenlan Chia’s Twinkle line unveiled on the Atelier runway (a runway that previously saw the new Vera Wang, Reem Acra and Peter Som collections). Backstage was a flurry of gorgeous statuesque girls being primped and the make-up artists and dressers getting the girls ready. TV cameras and reporters were also bustling to compete for Wenlan’s attention to get an exclusive sound bite or a quick preview of the collection. As showtime neared and the backstage pace increased, my friend Jennifer and I decided to seek refuge in our front-row seats alongside the runway.
Having established herself as a superb knitwear designer, Wenlan crafted her latest line around her two signature styles- chunky hand-made and unique graphic knits. She wove her chunky knits into unexpected structures creating feminine hoodies, edgy cardigans and paired them with flirty skirts- all accented with ribbons and bows. She accessorizes with her trademark wraps, scarves and hats.
Her graphic knitwear designs transport you to an animated world of enchantment and mystery with cats, unicorns, butterflies, wintry forests and a mischievous fox.
One highlight piece for me was a universally flattering emerald green silk dress that evokes red carpet dreams.
Sheer anklets with metallic high heels gave the collection a retro yet modern feel- a perfect complement to the spirit of Twinkle.
